Wits offers a range of degree and certificate programmes:

Degrees 
The Career-Entry Honours Degree (BA Hons in Journalism and Media Studies) is for graduates in any field who wish to become journalists. We encourage students with a background in the humanities, arts, sciences, commerce, law and other faculties to apply. Students do a rich mix of theoretical and hands-on practical work, such as producing a newspaper, an online site or running a radio broadcast, and will emerge with the skills and knowledge to operate in a newsroom. 20 students are selected a year after a written test and interview. This degree is offered full-time only over one year.

The Mid-Career Honours Degree is for journalists who have worked in the profession for at least three years. It can be done full-time (in one year) or part-time (over two years). Journalists without a previous degree may enter by passing a special entrance test. Classes are held in the evening to accommodate working professionals, or as short full-time blocks of 1 - 2 weeks.

The Masters Degree is for students who have our Journalism Honours or an equivalent AND at least two years journalism experience, or a four-year degree and at least five years of professional experience. The Masters can be done full-time (in one year) or part-time (over two years) and includes a significant work of original research. Classes are held in the evening to accommodate working professionals, while some courses are available on a block release basis, generally two weeks long.

Wits journalism offers Masters degrees that specialise in Financial Journalism, Investigative Reporting, Radio Journalism and Media and Politics.

 

Several of our courses are available as stand-alone options, leading to a certificate. In other words, you can do them without registering for a full degree. Subject to certain rules, certificates can sometimes later be turned into credits for a degree. See a full list of available courses.
This includes speicalist courses in Financial Journalism and Investigative Reporting.

The Radio Academy offers a special Radio Certificate, covering all aspects of radio broadcasting and consisting of a number of 1 - 2 week fulltime modules spread over a year.

Journalism for Communicators is a part-time, one-semester certification course for those who work in communication and need journalism skills. This is ideal for NGO, government or corporate communicators who need to brush up on their skills, and it can be followed with the more advanced Journalim for Communicators B course.

We offer certificates in Development Communications (A and B) which are designed to immerse government, NGO or private sector communicators in the practice, ethics and theory of using communication to promote development.

                                         South African applicants 30th September 2011
Deadlines for the certificate/short courses programmes are at least a month before they are scheduled to begin.

FinWrite Conference 2011

Some 45 working journalists representing most of South Africa's business publications attended Wits Journalism's two-day workshop on July 11 and 12.

Speakers were drawn from the public and private sectors, including the Reserve Bank, National Treasury, JSE, Industrial Development Corporation, World Bank and International Monetary Fund.
