Public engagement

A key aim of the Observatory is to ensure that the findings and implications of original research are circulated beyond the academy into the media world and the public domain. We actively attempt to stimulate critical discussion of media issues through public events, through publishing reports in industry publications and local media.

In this section of the Media Observatory we hope to showcase the ongoing research and writing work of the department, as well as information about seminars and talks resulting from research or visitors to the Department.

The Ruth First Fellowship funds journalists, writers or researchers to undertake an in-depth project of social research, which culminates in the annual Ruth First lecture, and in publication. The work follows the legacy of Ruth First’s politically and socially engaged journalism, and the lecture aims to convene a discussion about issues of importance to our transforming society. Last year’s lecture featured Cosatu’s Zwelinzima Vavi on issues of the poor, Christa Kuljian on Zimbabwean refugees at Johannesburg’s Central Methodist Church, and Crystal Orderson on the how Mitchell's Plain women use their social grants. Previous lectures have featured writers and photographers on issues of climate change, HIV/AIDS, women in Parliament and political processes on the ground in township communities. The Media Observatory has convened the Forum for African Media Educators (FAME), a network for journalism educators from key training institutions in Africa. Fame meets at least once a year to discuss common issues, develops media teaching and research skills, addresses the human and financial capital needs in these journalism schools, promotes awareness of journalism principles and ethics, enhances critical and independent thinking and debate among educators and students and promotes a fee and independent media.
