Those who pass the exams will be granted the Sudanese Journalists official license allowing them to practice journalism in Sudan. They will further need to practice for at least for years to be able to occupy positions of responsibility in the media institutions like managing editor.  In Sudan, one is allowed to write essays and opinions pieces without necessarily sitting for the examination. However, it is mandatory to possess a certificate for one to be allowed to edit reports, news, interviews or to head a unit or a section in a newspaper.    The exam contains five subjects: Editing Skills, Language and Grammar, Translation, Computer and General Knowledge which consists of Media Law, Code of Ethics and local, global information.  “For the next year, we are planning to introduce a new subject on ethics and rights of the journalist,†said the President of the Sudanese Journalists Union, Dr. Muheldin Idris Titawi. “This will enable us to match the international trends of ethical journalism and to promote the culture of human rights,†he added<>.END    Background  This the first exam organized by Sudanese Journalists Union. In past years, it was the responsibility of National Press Council to conduct the exams.  This pushes the number of Sudanese journalists to 4,380. |
