The third edition of Joburg Radio Days happened over July 4th – 6th 2012 at Wits University in Johannesburg. The conference was a great success with international and local speakers addressing delegates on panels about a wide range of topics, as well as through seminars, workshops and skills sessions.

If you missed out you can read new stories about the conference, see the programme or download some of the speakers' notes. For a read through the personal experience of one of the speakers, James Cridland, have a look at his blog post about it here

The Wits Radio Academy, situated in the heart of the continent’s media capital, hosted the first editions of the conference in 2009 and 2011. The conference has grown in size and stature: by 2011, there were 133 registered delegates from 20 countries – and other slipped in unregistered. Attendees were professionals from the various sectors of radio as well as academics, from student intern to station manager.

The 2012 conference was bigger and better. Themes and topics planned for this year included:

  • The current state and future challenges of an old medium: can it adapt or will it die?
  • How best can radio stations make use of the opportunities of online and social media?
  • Examples of great new programming concepts: live music events; investigative journalism: reality radio etc;
  • Recipes for success in music programming, breakfast shows and others;
  • SA online radio stations;
  • Online audience trends in the US and SA;
  • Can digital radio broadcasting succeed in SA?
  • Zimbabwe broadcasting reform;
  • Radio, language, ethnicity: a toxic mix?
  • Community radio’s search for sustainability with independence;
  • The three new commercial licenses in SA
