Projects & fellowships

Wits Journalism is involved in, runs and/or spearheads a number of projects.

Most of these are designed to give our students experience in the practicalities of their craft - career-entry students are responsible for every facet of Vuvuzela, the campus newspaper and its web edition. At the end of each year, the career-entry students have to complete an 'in-depth project' that results in a website that they produce all the content for. VOW 90.5fm is staffed primarily by students, although not restricted to Journalism students.

Wits Journalism administrates the Ruth First Fellowship, which aims to foster and encourage the work of South African journalists and researchers that follows in a tradition of critical, progressive, independent-minded writing.

In addition, the Wits Justice Project, which investigates the plight of those locked up in South Africa's prisons, many of whom are still awaiting trial after years in jail, is run under the auspices of Wits Journalism.

JournAids is a website that assists journalists in reporting on and about people with HIV/Aids and was launched with the assistance of Wits Journalism, as part of its involvement in the HIV/Aids and the Media Project.
