Wits offers a range of degree and certificate programmes:
The Mid-Career Honours Degreeis for journalists who have worked in the profession for at least three years. It can be done full-time (in one year) or part-time (over two years). Journalists without a previous degree may enter by passing a special entrance test. Classes are held in the evening to accommodate working professionals, or as short full-time blocks of 1 - 2 weeks.
The Masters Degree is for students who have our Journalism Honours or an equivalent AND at least two years journalism experience, or a four-year degree and at least five years of professional experience. The Masters can be done full-time (in one year) or part-time (over two years) and includes a significant work of original research. Classes are held in the evening to accommodate working professionals, while some courses are available on a block release basis, generally two weeks long.
Wits journalism offers Masters degrees that specialise in Financial Journalism, Investigative Reporting, Radio Journalism and Media and Politics.
Journalism for Communicators is a part-time, one-semester certification course for those who work in communication and need journalism skills. This is ideal for NGO, government or corporate communicators who need to brush up on their skills, and it can be followed with the more advanced Journalim for Communicators B course.
We offer certificates in Development Communications (A and B) which are designed to immerse government, NGO or private sector communicators in the practice, ethics and theory of using communication to promote development.
